HORST

HORST is the fruit of a long-standing collaboration between the Viennese company Kohlmaier and the architecture and design studio heri&salli. What began as a hand-drawn sketch by heri&salli, a spark of enthusiasm, and rounds of discussion slowly grew, nourished by Kohlmaier’s experience and countless insights, into a fully fledged project. Eighteen months had passed by the time the idea had taken shape. 

The rod framework was refined for serial production and crafted by the Technologiemanufaktur SFK in Kirchham, Upper Austria.

The name HORST refers to a “nest” woven together from “branches.”

Inspired by this image, 61 rods create a protective structure surrounding a cube as the geometric ideal of human measure. Out of this arises a symbiosis of humanity, geometry, and nature.

HORST is made from beech wood, locally sourced materials, and purely mechanical connecting elements. This allows us to pursue a sustainable, resilient approach from initial development to the finished product. 

That is what HORST stands for.
